Braille Literacy

Provides training to individuals with visual impairments to read and write Braille for use in their daily lives. The Braille teacher works with each client to identify his/her unique braille literacy goals and implement a program to reach those goals.

The Braille Literacy Program teaches many skills, including:

  • Reading one or all the braille codes, including:
    • Uncontracted braille
    • Contracted braille
    • Nemeth Code
  • Writing the braille code, using:
    • slate and stylus
    • braillewriter
  • Labeling home items using braille
  • Increasing your braille reading speed
  • Knowing where to purchase braille supplies
  • Knowing where to buy and borrow braille books

The braille teacher works with each client to identify his/her unique braille literacy goals and to implement a program to reach those goals.

The Braille Literacy Program’s main goal is to provide clients with the skills necessary to regain independence in the area of reading and writing.
